Mutable AI built Auto Wiki, which read a repository and wrote the documentation for it, plus a spec-to-code assistant that turned written requirements into implementation. Google acquired the company in 2024 and neither product is available as a standalone tool any more. What follows is not a drop-in swap: the two jobs Auto Wiki did - understand the codebase, then write something down about it - now sit in different tools, so pick by which half of the job you actually miss.

1. Sourcegraph Cody

Sourcegraph Cody is the closest thing to Auto Wiki's first half. It indexes your whole repository and answers questions across files, which is how you rebuild the understanding the wiki used to capture. The caveat is commercial: Sourcegraph retired its free and individual Pro plans in July 2025, so Cody is now an enterprise purchase and individuals are pointed toward Amp instead.

2. Cursor

Cursor indexes a codebase and lets you ask questions about it in the editor, then write the answer straight into a markdown file. That is the Auto Wiki loop with a human in the middle: read the repo, draft the explanation, save it next to the code. It has a free tier plus paid plans, which makes it the easiest of the five to try this week.

3. Continue.dev

Continue.dev is the open-source option. It runs as an extension in VS Code and JetBrains, lets you point it at your own model, and keeps the code on your machine if that is a requirement. The project has stayed free after its team joined Cursor, so it is the one on this list you can self-host without paying anyone.

4. Aider

Aider builds a map of the repository and edits files from the terminal, working with whatever LLM you already pay for. For the spec-to-code half of Mutable's product it is the most direct substitute: you describe the change, it proposes a diff against the real files. It is open-source and has no subscription of its own.

5. Qodo

Qodo, formerly Codium AI, is the closest replacement for the output rather than the reading. It generates tests from the code and reviews pull requests against intent, which is the part of Mutable's promise that produced something checkable. There is a free tier, so you can see whether its test suggestions match how your team writes them.
